The Badrinath Temple operates a strict daily ritual schedule that has been followed for centuries. Understanding this schedule is essential for planning your darshan and participating in special pujas.
Daily Temple Schedule
4:30 AM: Temple opens — Mahabhishek (special morning abhishek) 7:00 AM: Balabhog Aarti (morning offering of food to the deity) 12:00 PM: Madhyahna Pooja (midday ritual) 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM: Afternoon break (temple closed) 4:30 PM: Dhoop Aarti (incense aarti) 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM: Evening Darshan open to all 7:30 PM: Sandhya Aarti (evening aarti — one of the most beautiful experiences at Badrinath) 9:00 PM: Shayan Bhog (final night offering) — temple closes
Morning Abhishek (Mahabhishek)
The Mahabhishek is performed from 4:30 to 6:30 AM using sacred items including Panchamrit, tulsi leaves, and flowers. It is considered the most auspicious puja of the day. Space is limited — this puja must be pre-booked either through the official Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee website or at the Badrinath counter upon arrival.
Cost: ₹2,000–₹8,000 depending on puja type (Rukmani Ashtakam, Vishesh Pooja, Sampoorna Abhishek, etc.)
Balabhog Aarti
At 7:00 AM, the Balabhog (breakfast offering) aarti is performed. This is when the deity is offered the first meal of the day — prepared in the temple kitchen. The aarti at this time is more intimate and less crowded than the evening ceremony.
Evening Sandhya Aarti
The Sandhya Aarti at approximately 7:30 PM is the grandest ceremony of the day at Badrinath. The temple is illuminated, the Alaknanda River roars in the background, and the collective chanting of thousands of pilgrims creates an atmosphere of intense devotion. This aarti is free and open to all.
VIP Darshan Process
VIP darshan allows skip-the-queue access and closer proximity to the sanctum. Passes cost ₹300–₹1,200. Available at the temple counter or pre-bookable online. In peak season (May), general queue wait times can be 3–6 hours — VIP is worth the investment.
Rules for Entry
- Remove footwear at the gate
- Leathergoods (wallets, belts, bags) must be deposited at the cloak room
- Modest dress is mandatory — bare shoulders or shorts are not permitted
- Cameras and phones NOT allowed inside the main sanctum
- Maintain silence inside the inner chamber
- No touching the main deity idol (darshan is visual — through the inner doorway)
Dress Code
Traditional attire is preferred — dhoti-kurta for men, salwar-kameez or saree for women. Many pilgrims carry a specific puja dhoti for the darshan and change back into regular clothes afterward.
